Houdinis Will
Your will is constructed to help your loved ones sort out the disposal of your estate when you’ve passed away. Whilst yours may be simple, here are one or two with some quirks to them.
Make A Will Don’t Leave It to Chance
It is sensible to make a will. All of us understand that, but actually doing it seems such a inconvenience. How much thought went in these “wills with a difference”?
Even the legendary conjurer and escape artist, Harry Houdini, couldn’t escape death. Having died from a burst appendix, one of his biggest shocks came with the reading of his will. His magic supplys went to his former partner Theodore, who was also his brother. His magical powers failed on the next term – his considerable library of scrolls on magic and the occult. He left these to the American Society for Psychical Research, but with the term that their research officer J Malcolm Bird, who also was the editor of their journal, resigned. They declined the conditions the compilation passed to the Library of Congress.
The trained rabbits that he utilised in his tricks vacated their hats and were distributed amongst the children of friends. Continuing the strange style, his gave his wife 10 words, which were a secret code, with the promise that he would employ these words to contact her from the afterlife. Each year for 10 years, following his death, she faithfully held séances, but Houdini never made contact.
Kozmic Blues and rock singer Janis Lyn Joplin had a short but memorable history. She sung several rock anthems and four albums, including “To Love Somebody” and “Me and Bobby McGee”. After years of drugs and drink, she passed away from an overdose, aged twenty seven. Two days before her death in 1970 her cheap will the figure of $2,500 to fund an all night wake at her favourite pub so that her friends could “get blasted after I’m gone.” It must have been some celebration – that was an appreciable amount of cash back in 1970.
We’ve all read about people that, randomly, leave all their estate to the dogs’ home, much to the dismay of their family. Lot’s of family feuds start when a will is read. As long as the person who made the will is of sound mind and not under duress, there is often little that can be done to object to such a decision.
Eccentricities aside, if you pass on without leaving a will, the people whom you would want to inherit wont always be the ones that do so. You might have a partner of several years, but if you’re not married or in a legal partnership, he or she won’t get your money, regardless of your aims and assurances. This can be upsetting when it’s not clearly stated and can cause devastating financial consequences.
The up to date way to get your will started is to go online and find a cheaper wills . However simple your wishes are, it’s best to get the professionals to write it for you and you can be assured that you’re leaving things exactly how you would want.
