Garrett Metal Detector Finds 1 Million Pounds Worth Of Treasure
You will no doubt have read about the £1 million pound treasure find this November (2009) by an amateur who unearthed ancient gold jewellery in a field near Stirling Scotland.
More importantly, and yes this is true, it was his first time using the Garrett Metal Detector – so, I guess you could say he was impressed.
Whilst there have been a number of large treasure finds, the majority tend to be limited to the odd ancient coin or wedding ring lost on a beach. That said, interest in metal detecting has soared as more and more people take it up as a hobby, which is perfectly understandable during these recessionary times.
Finding treasure is not the only use for metal detectors, metal detectors are also used to detect foreign bodies in food, and in the construction industry to detect steel reinforcing bars in concrete and pipes and wires buried in walls and floors. Yes, it is a little less glamorous but essential never the less.
They are also used for the detection of land mines, weapons and you have no doubt passed through one at an airport security check where they are in everyday use. Metal detectors have been used for close to a century and the modern metal detector was created around 1930.
Today’s boom in metal detector sales has just as much to do with the hobbyist dreaming of great wealth as it has to do with our increased sense of insecurity.
