Dry Sockets: Prevention May Really Be The Best Cure

Dry socket is a dental condition that is noticed after operation in 2 % to 5 % cases of tooth extraction. What happens is that after the tooth removal, the blood clot usually formed to cover the vulnerable nerve and bone endings doesn’t form. This makes the bones and nerves open to air, fluids and food leading to acute pain, spreading to the person’s face on the side of the tooth extraction. The condition influences mostly the molar and the wisdom teeth.

Medical Treatment

Prevention is the best treatment

There is in reality no treatment for dry socket symptoms as it that occurs and later vanishes all by itself. The goal of the medical care is prevention and lessening of the pain.

Among males, ones that use tobacco or smoke it are more prone to this condition. Smoking decreases the oxygen percentage in one’s blood stream thus impairing the person’s ability to repair. Smokers are advised to avoid smoking for a few days before to and after the extraction. Also the suction action may disturb the blood clot from the extraction site.

In females, the taking of pregnancy prevention tablets increases the risk of this condition. Higher levels of estrogen that are associated with pregnancy prevention tablets dilute the blood and hinders blood clotting. Females are therefore asked to avoid taking the pregnancy prevention pills for at least a week before and after the procedure. Or else they must have their tooth removed in the last week of the menstrual cycle.

Dealing with The Pain

Analgesics are the chief medications for reducing the levels of pain. The usual practice is to have a person on analgesics and inflammation reducing medicines for ten to fifteen days after the operation. To stop the infection from spreading or turning worse, dentists advise antiseptics and in very severe cases antibiotics are given.

Antiinfective dressings are the chief treatment for this condition. The inflamed site is carefully soaked with saline and afterward a antiinfective dressing is placed in the socket. This dressing soothes the region, lessens the aches and promotes the formation of newer tissues.
